The Dubuque County Democratic Convention is where local Democrats come together to continue the grassroots process that begins at the precinct caucus.
If you were elected as a delegate — or if you simply want to witness local democracy in action — we invite you to be part of it.
The county convention is the next step after the precinct caucus.
At the convention, delegates elected at their caucus gather to:
This process ensures that our party remains grassroots and locally driven.
We have several goals for the 2026 convention:
Delegates
If you were elected at your precinct caucus, you may vote at the convention.
Youth Delegates
Youth delegates selected at caucus may fully participate.
Observers
Any Democrat in Dubuque County is welcome to attend as an observer.
If you’re unsure about your delegate status, contact us and we’ll be happy to help.
Whether this is your first convention or your twenty-first, here’s what the morning typically includes:
The meeting is structured and guided by parliamentary procedure, but don’t worry — you won’t be expected to know the rules by heart. Volunteers and party leaders will walk participants through each step.
The tone is respectful, organized, and community-focused.
The convention system ensures that our party works from the bottom up.
This layered structure keeps decision-making in the hands of local Democrats — not just party leadership.
All participants must register. There is a suggested $20 contribution for delegates, and $10 for youth delegates and observers. This optional donation helps cover convention costs.
However, no delegate’s right to vote will ever be denied due to inability to contribute.
If cost is a concern, please let us know in advance and we’ll make arrangements respectfully and privately.
For a full explanation of rules, procedures, delegate responsibilities, and the convention process, please review the official handbook:
The convention hall and restrooms are accessible at ground level. Handicap parking is available near the entrance.
If you require additional accommodations, please let us know as early as possible so we can ensure arrangements are made.
Do I have to be a delegate to attend?
No. Any Democrat may attend as a guest. Only delegates may vote.
What if I didn’t attend the caucus?
You may still attend as an observer, but voting delegates must have been elected at their precinct caucus.
What if I arrive after 10:00 AM?
Late-arriving registration is open until 10:45 AM. After that time, registration closes and only credentialed delegates may vote.
Do I have to donate to attend?
No. However, we do encourage delegates to donate at least $20 to help offset the cost of convening. Youth delegates and observers are encouraged to donate at least $10 each.
No one will be denied participation for financial reasons.
What should I bring?
Bring a photo ID and a willingness to participate respectfully!
How long does the convention last?
We anticipate concluding around 12:45 PM.
I’ve never done this before. Will I feel lost?
Not at all! Many attendees are first-timers. Party leaders will explain each step as we move through the agenda.
Who do I contact if I have questions?
Please use the contact form and someone will respond promptly.
